Confusion causes a Pokémon to have a 33% chance to hurt themselves instead of using the selected move.

Confusion's damage is calculated as:

• a type-less 40 power Physical-category move.
• it can not score a critical hit.
• it does not receive a same-type attack bonus
• it is not affected by abilities such as Wonder Guard, Technician or a held Life Orb.

Effects that interact with the Burn status condition:

Pokémon with the ability Own Tempo can not become confused.
Safeguard and Misty Terrain protect the user's party from being confused.
A move used against a Pokémon with the ability Tangled Feet has 50 accuracy.

Other Effects

A disobedient Pokémon (too high level for the currently held badges), can also hurt itself in confusion instead of attacking.

Changes

• In Gen 1 an enemy's Reflect doubles the Pokémon's Defense
  Using Haze cures confusion for both Pokémon.
• In Gen 1-2 confusion has no random damage factor.
• In Gen 1-5 confusion's damage is reduced by 50% when the Pokémon is burned
• In Gen 1-6 confusion has a 50% chance to hurt the confused Pokémon instead of attacking.
• In Gen 2 a Pokémon own {Reflect;MOVE;reflect} doubles its own {Defense;STAT;DEFENSE} when hurting itself.
  Type-enhancing items such as Black Belt increases confusion's damage when it would have increased the power of the original move.
• In Gen 2-3 confusion's damage is reduced by 50% when the selected move is either Explosion or Self-Destruct.
• In Gen 3-4 confusion's damage is increased by 10% or 20% when holding a Silk Scarf.
  The damage received can also be increased by abilities that increase Attack such as Guts, and items that increase {Attack;STAT;ATTACK} such as Thick Club
• In Gen 4 Helping Hand increases the confusion damage.
  The damage received is also be increased if Rivalry is active.
