Thief

Takes the target's item.

Thief deals damage and steals the target's held item if the user is not already holding an item.

• Items stolen from wild Pokémon are kept after the battle ends.
• Items stolen from a Trainer's Pokémon are not kept after battle ends.
• Items that activate on attack such as Focus Band activate before being stolen.
• Consumable items that activate on being attacked such as Focus Sash are consumed and therefore can not be removed.
• The ability Sticky Hold prevents items from being stolen.
• The following items are always unable to be stolen:
  • Griseous Orb from a Giratina
  • Any Type Plate held by Arceus
  • Any Drive held by Genesect
  • Any Mega Stone held by a Pokémon that can use it to Mega-Evolve
  • Any mail item such as Grass Mail
  • Any e-Reader berry such as Pumkin Berry
  • Any Z-Crystal such as Buginium Z
  • Any memory item such as Bug Memory held by Silvally
  • Rusted Sword if either the user or the target is Zacian
  • Rusted Shield if either the user or the target is Zamazenta
  • Booster Energy if the target is a Paradox Pokémon (excluding Koraidon and Miraidon ).
  • Wellspring Mask , Hearthflame Mask or Cornerstone Mask if either the user or the target is Ogerpon

Wild Pokémon can not steal the user's held item.
Thief always fails without dealing damage in Max Raid Battles.

• In Gen 2 Thief is affected by King's Rock
• In Gen 2-3 Thief is categorized as Special
• In Gen 2-4 Thief can steal a Trainer Pokémon's item permanently but will not steal anything if used by an NPC or wild Pokémon.
• In Gen 2-5 Thief has 40 power and 10 PP.
• In Gen 9 the stolen item is deposited directly into the player's bag.
